Benjamin Garrett served with his father in the war against the alliance. Ben lost track of his father durring the battle at Serenity and has yet to find out exactly what happened to him. when Ben left the Military he went in search of his mother and sister. He has no idea other than his sister had been sent to a military school and his mother had died. Now he works as a farmer on an outer ring planet, trying to keep his mouth shut and his ears and eyes open.
Ben would see the occasional ship land, buy some basics from him and leave again, but none so interesting that it kept his attention. He made decent money as a farmer till his crop and home were forced to be abandoned when the Reavers hit. He got away fine but his whole place had been destroyed, along with over half the neighboring town. He hopped board a passenger ship headed back to Ariel, the place of his birth and he set up shop looking for work.
Being an ex soldier it wasn't hard to find work but it was crap work. If he had been an Alliance soldier he'd have gotten prime work someplace up town, instead he took to being a Bouncer at some club down near the docks. He got free drinks, and plenty of looks from people, but in the end it realy didn't matter he wasn't planning to stay long. He never felt right being in one place for too long. But for now, this was a good location. He stayed near the docks and got to see plenty of the commings and goings. If he was to find her, this was a good a place as any to start keeping his eyes out.

Her hands shook as she gripped the gun in her hand. She had to mentally calm herself down. If she didn’t make the shot it wasn’t the end of the world, just the end of her school social life. She instantly became still and took aim. It took her only a fraction of a second to adjust and then she gently squeezed the trigger. She heard a grunt from behind her and smiled just ever so slightly to herself. She knew she had hit the target. It was over 200 yards away, and she’d hit it dead on. She stood up and clicked the safety to her gun. She stood at attention and waited for her instructor to say something. She knew it wouldn’t be a compliment so she was ready for whatever he had to throw at her. She knew she had broken his record, so it didn’t really matter what he thought. She knew. She always knew. She went back to her dorm room and sat down on her bed. She looked down at her hands, they were caked with dirt and grime. She wiped them off on her cargos and laid back. It had been a long day. When she woke she was aware of the sense of being watched. She looked around her now dark room. The door was wide open, and there was no one there. She stood up and went over to close it. It was then she noticed an envelope on the floor in front of where she stood. She knelt down to pick it up. Elizabeth, you may not realize it now, but this is all going to be for your own good. I hope you can one day understand why I’ve chosen to do what I’ve done. that was it, no name, no reason for the letter just some form of apology. She furrowed her brow to think about what on earth this person could have done to warrant leaving some weird note at her doorstep. It was then she noticed the sound of footsteps coming down the hall. She looked out her doorway to see the headmaster of the school. General Fredrickson. He wasn’t known for his kindness there, but for his harsh punishments and unnecessary expulsions. He stopped, as she feared at her doorway and faced her. She instinctively stood at attention and saluted him. “ At ease soldier.” he stated looking at her with a bored expression. “ I’ve been informed that you have excelled at all your studies, especially of weapons and combat training. It is because of this that I’ve also been told that you have a weakness, or perhaps a sympathy for the people you beat in that training. So though you may make a good soldier you are not material for the Alliance’s sectors. You will graduate as there is no academic reason not to, but you will be released on your own to find your own place in the worlds.” he told her with no expression whatsoever. She waited till he left before she relaxed. thank god. No reason to worry about having to serve those self absorbed imbeciles. she thought to herself. That was how she wanted it. She had no choice but to be at this place, so to have an out that didn’t consider betraying her brother who fought against the Alliance, made her very happy indeed.
